#20 Keep on learning
Continued learning is widely considered to be one of the main contributors to our sense of wellbeing. In fact, along with Give, Connect, Take Notice and Be active – Keep Learning is one of the evidence-based Five ways to wellbeing (resulting from a Government office for science report).
There are so many benefits associated with life-long learning:
Gives us a sense of purpose as we are continually setting goals for ourselves
Can encourage more social interaction to help us connect with others who are sharing learning experiences
According to studies, helps us to be more optimistic and to get the most out of life
Gives us pride in ourselves – we all like to receive recognition for an achievement
Boosts our self-confidence and self esteem
Can improve our opportunities if learning is associated with our employment prospects and career progression
Remember that learning doesn’t have to mean taking a course that leads to a qualification – it could also be learning how to fix something yourself, cooking a different type of food, or even setting aside some time to just read about something that you always wanted to know.
Here are 5 tips to get the most out of learning:
Learn things that genuinely interests you
Go at your own pace – some people learn quicker than others
Don’t put pressure on yourself – we all respond to different ways of learning
Don’t compare yourself to others - this is about your personal growth not someone else’s
Be patient! Find joy in the act of learning and not just getting to an end result
We humans are naturally curious but too often learning is seen as a one off means to an end instead of an ongoing process that can enrich our lives.
